Easy to remember, simple messages work best

There is an absolute plethora of health and safety information out there which any reasonable person could literally drown in. So how do you get the message of health and safety across to people?

Simple is best. We live busy lives and our brains only retain so much information. The message on this 1962 poster  is simple but effective – You can get another pair of goggles but you’re on your last pair of eyes.

This headline caught our attention this week – Spaceman heads to Whangarei on health and safety mission. The article is about a retired NASA shuttle astronaut who speaks  on teamwork, leadership and safety. One key point made is about the danger of the habit (a bad one) of continuing to use unreviewed practices. We have done this before, it has always worked therefore we accept the situation. The habit we need to develop is to take a step back and look at situations with fresh eyes – it could prevent an accident or save a life.

Today, Friday, 28 April 2017 is World Day for Safety and Health at Work. Have a safe and healthy day. You are allowed to have a polite snigger at the irony of the theme for 2017 (Optimize the collection and use of OSH data) in light of the comments above – as long as you think about health and safety and develop good habits.
