Listener journalist Rebecca Macfie investigated the disaster at Pike River and wrote the book Tragedy at Pike River: How and Why 29 Men Died.  This short summary of lessons learnt (less than a page we promise) is worth reading and considering in the context of your business.

Healthy work places

A worker is ten times more likely to die from a work-related disease than from a workplace accident.  Many people also have health related issues due to their work.  I am sure you can think of many people who have noise induced hearing loss due to their work many years ago when there was no focus on the damage to hearing caused by prolonged exposure to noise.

WorkSafe has released a 10 year strategic plan for work-related health (previously known as occupational health) and has a special section on its website for this.  You can expect to see a greater focus on work-related health including education, engagement and if necessary, enforcement.
